INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING GROUND CONTROL DATA TO E-TOPO

* Preferred means of submittal (in descending order): E-mail (required for Expedite), disk, clean hardcopy printout, fax

* Electronic file should be in an ASCII (plain text) format (.txt), not a proprietary format (.doc, .wpd)

* The file should contain a header identifying the client and project, preferably including the E-TOPO job designation (ex. T12A/02456)

* The beginning of the file should contain a paragraph of metadata, i.e.: State Plane Coordinate Zone, horizontal and vertical datum, etc. If the survey is on an assumed datum, so state and give basis of orientation (true, magnetic, local grid)

* Coordinate data should be arranged in columns below the metadata paragraph (see samples below). Data columns should be comma or space delimited. (Comma delimited is preferred. If space delimited, no spaces are permitted in any of the columns.)

Columns in the file are to be in the following order:

Point Name (Numeric or alphanumeric)
Northing
Easting
Elevation
Description

The order of these first 5 columns should be rigidly adhered to.

* The client may include additional columns of data if they are described in a sentence placed below the metadata and above the coordinate data

* Ground control points requested and identified by E-TOPO (ex. HV2K05) should be so labeled in the coordinate file, preferably in the Point Name column. If user software does not support alphanumeric point names, this E-TOPO designation needs to appear in the Description column

* Drawing files in .dwg or .dxf format are encouraged as aids in identifying control points and are particularly useful for defining mapping limits. However, drawing files do not replace a coordinate file supplied in the format described above
